Hello Birney Families,

My name is Kristal Wright and I will be your PTA President for the 2008-2009 school year. Robin Clements will be our Vice President, Tracye Purchase is Secretary and Tara Oliver will be our Treasurer.

We are starting a new school year with some new staff and importantly a new principal, Rattana Inthirathvongsy. A major change for the school was the adoption a Standard School Attire (SSD) policy during the spring.

In August, we’ll kick-off our PTA Membership drive. Melissa Jones and Jamie Bailey have volunteered the chair this important committee and are eager to get everyone signed up. We will be accepting memberships at all of our PTA sponsored events.

The PTA would like to continue our goal of increasing membership, and communication between the school and you, while bringing new ideas into the school. Last year, we tried some new events, which were all successful: Sundae Social, Birney Boot Camp, Stevi B’s nights, Box Tops for Education classroom challenge and International Night. These events will be continued as well as the regular events: book fair, mother/son and father/daughter dances and Red Ribbon Week. If there is enough interest, we’ll see about scheduling a skate night or two for the school to enjoy. We were also able to distribute free samples of Tide laundry detergent at the "Standard School Attire" informational meeting.

Last year, the PTA presented Birney a new lectern, podium, and framing our Title 1 Distinguished flag. The flag is proudly displayed on the wall outside the office. Being Title 1 Distinguished for the past 7 years is quite an honor and is a great representation of the hard work being done in our school. Your PTA funds have also sponsored other school activities, that are too many to mention, but a list can be obtained from any PTA Board member.

Birney has been selected to sponsor ADAC (Alcohol Drug Awareness Conference) this year. This will take place during Red Ribbon Week on October 31. The event will bring dignitaries and other various visitors to our school to help educate the children about the negative impact of alcohol and drug abuse. There will also be a session for adults on October 30. This event will be televised on Cobb Channel 23. This event is a big honor for the Birney community.

Please take the time to look at our bulletin board. We post monthly events, as well as other information. As usual, your PTA Board members will always welcome your comments. If you would like to help out with any of our activities, let us know. You do not need to have any special skills but simply the desire to help. We can always use your help.

I am looking forward to seeing all of our Birney families at our upcoming events. Remember to check the website (www.birneypta.org) often for updates on activities.

Thank you for visiting the Birney Elementary PTA web site.

Sincerely,

Kristal Wright
President
